Are you one of those people who are boycotting their favorite food just because their mom told them to? Back then, if our parents told us that certain foods were harmful for our health, we would not eat it, no questions asked. This age-old habit has followed us into our adulthood and has taken a deep root.

Let me tell you something, a lot of those things your mom told you about your favorite foods, is a myth. To debunk these myths, many nutritionist conducted studies on food that were considered harmful for our health. The results were staggering as they were nothing but symptoms of changing weather conditions, which people had attributed to the food they ate.

Following are four nutrition myths that will finally bring to the light the truth and re-kindle your love with your favorite childhood foods:

1.    Chocolate Causes Acne

As a child, every kid was told chocolate causes acne. Even chocolate ice cream was not safe from this. People believe that since the chocolate making process is so hot, it might increase their body temperature and cause acne.

Chocolate eaten in moderation can do no harm to your body, however, this does not mean that you should eat it every day. A chocolate treat once a week will not increase your weight or cause tooth decay. If you are still not sure about it, then eat one of those chocolate nut bars. Nutritionists say that a small piece of chocolate can boost your brain activity.

2.    Egg Yolks Are Bad for Heart

A single egg yolk makes 10% of your diet fat. This is completely fine for the body and does not increase your cholesterol level. The culprits here are trans and saturated fats, which you are more likely to get from junk food. Doctors have discovered that any food we eat, which has cholesterol, is compensated by the body as it produces less cholesterol. People having no prior heart disease history can eat an egg every day.

3.    A Balanced Diet Includes Whole Wheat Bread

Before the 1960s, this might have been true but now it is hard to say that whole-wheat food must be a part of your diet. The whole wheat bread made now a days is nothing more than pulverized fine flour. It can cause:

·      Increased cholesterol level

·      Bloating

·      Tiredness

·      Stomach inflammation

·      Irritable bowel syndrome

4.    Carbohydrates Are the Main Factor in Increasing Weight

An average person consumes more than 2,000 calories, which amounts to more than 250 gm of carbohydrates. Consuming more than 4,000 calories in a day might prove this statement true but other than that, this is a complete myth.

More than half of our diet consists of carbohydrates and the rest is fat and proteins. The percentage is as follows:

·      Carbohydrates – 45 to 65%

·      Fat – 20 to 35%

·      Protein – 10 to 35%

Not fulfilling the carbohydrate quota can cause weight gain because the body’s enzymes involved in metabolizing your food do not work and hence your weight increases. Low carb diets may help you in the short term but by the end of the year, you are more likely to increase weight. With a balanced carb diet, you can maintain your weight, increase the production of Serotonin (brain chemical), which improves your mood and sharpens your memory.
