Ed Sheeran is back.

The red-haired sensation had taken a year off from touring to rest and work on his new album. His self-enforced hiatus is now over and he’s back with and unexpected treat for us. And it is not just his latest album divide (which is great, by the way).

He came back looking trim and in proper shape, making him all the more irresistible. Plus, he had an inspirational story and some wonderful health tips to share with us. How did he manage to do what he did, you ask?

For that, you need to understand how what he did was so amazing in the first place.

Letting himself go

During the year he was off, Sheeran went understandably easy on the physical activity and the result was that he doubled in size. For a while, he thought that the reason his clothes didn’t fit in the first place was that they had somehow magically shrunk.

"Sweatpants were the only things that fit and I thought everything had shrunk in the wash, but it hadn't," he shared in an interview with The Breakfast Club. He was right. His clothes didn’t magically shrink. He had magically ballooned.

The reason? Well, according to him, he was living on a diet of just pizza and beer. He used to do live on that diet before as well but he apparently didn’t realize that constant touring and performing almost every night was a hell of a workout. When he stopped touring for a year, he started putting on weight.

Until he couldn’t take it anymore.

Cutting down on the weight

The stinging realization that he was extremely overweight forced Sheeran to make some crucial lifestyle changes. The first thing he did was to cut down on the beer. One of the things people don’t understand about alcohol is that constant consumption can cause you to put on some weight.

Those who decide to cut back on it can cut back on the weight gain as well. He replaced beer with green juices that reduced his caloric intake.

Sheeran told the media that he did that after realizing that he used to go to restaurants to order steak and chips with broccoli and only eat the steak and chips and leave out the broccoli.

The secret to success

Ed’s girlfriend, hockey star Cherry Seaborn, played a huge role in his success, but she was not the secret ingredient. What made the change was the high-intensity interval training routine (HITT) she helped him create.

It was incredible.

Apart from controlling his diet, Sheeran only worked out for ten minutes a day. This involved 30-second intervals of sprinting and jogging. This may seem like nothing compared to what some people go through to shed weight.

But consistency is the key here. What’s important is that he didn’t miss a single day of HITT. Because if he did, he would’ve had to do an hour of exercise. That’s a brilliant motivation!
