In recent years, core strength has developed into a phenomenon which is more of a fashion statement, rather than an exercise. Sure, we do admit that flat tummies are nice, but there is a lot more to maintaining your core strength than just having a sexy six-pack.

The strengthening of your core (the muscles from your hips to the shoulders) is extremely important because of the following reasons:

1. Supports and creates balance

Core training helps in supporting your spine — a strong spine means your body is well balanced. A healthy spine is required for a body to function properly — if your spinal cord is weak, your entire body suffers. Your core strength helps you in balancing and maintaining proper posture. This is extremely important because it lowers your risk of injuries and helps you move in ways that will help you keep your balance.

2. Rids you of the recurring backaches

We know that a backache can be devastating. Since most of us work 8-12 hours a day in front of a screen, our back suffers serious strains due to the pressure. Core exercises help tone the muscles near your pelvis, hips, lower back and abdomen, which result in preventing recurring back pain and stress.

3. Makes you age slower

Who doesn’t want to look younger than they actually are? Here’s the good news: you will age slowly if you are an individual with a strong core. Your core helps the alignment of your body. A stronger core, means less complaining, leaves you feeling younger and ready to experience the adventures of hiking, climbing and more.

4. Improves your mental health

Your core is an area in your body where many important arteries are situated. Keeping this area in shape will mean that your nervous system is also in perfect order, which in turn leaves you feeling mentally stronger and sharper.  Additionally, having a strong and stable spine allows your brain cells to receive your body’s messages more efficiently.

5. Makes you look thinner yet feeling stronger

A well kept core strengthens your upper back and shoulder muscles. People who exercise don’t feel the need to sprawl now and then because of their weak mechanisms. A weak back will leave you feeling sluggish and can lead to gaining excess weight. A strong core leaves  your body looking thinner and appear taller. A happy core will make your body strong and more tolerant and you will realize that performing day to day tasks will not be so challenging

The bottom line — a stronger core is equivalent to giving yourself a full-blown body makeover. If you work on your core strength, you will feel happier, younger and stronger than you were before. Not only that, but a flat tummy, will definitely end up turning heads on a beach!
